The other day, a member at Dedicated Health opened up to me about feeling overwhelmed. Family health issues, work stress, the struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle... it was all piling up. They were ready to ditch their workouts, convinced it was the only way to cope.
I get it. I've stared down that same overwhelm monster.
There was a time when I was juggling an 80-hour workweek, a soul-crushing commute, the launch of my personal training business, a relationship on the rocks, and trying to keep my own health in check. It felt like too much. And honestly, sometimes it was. I gave up. More than once.
But here's what I learned: every time I threw in the towel, I got better at throwing in the towel. And every time I stopped working out, my stress actually got worse.
I realized something crucial: people have faced far worse than me and still found a way to thrive. If they could do it, so could I. There had to be a way to navigate these challenges without completely falling apart.
I took a hard look at my life. Yes, it was a chaotic season. But I also knew that life would always have its challenges. If I quit every time things got tough, I was essentially teaching myself to quit on my goals, my dreams, and myself.
And I wasn't about to do that.
Instead of quitting, I focused on adapting. I learned to differentiate between what I could control and what I couldn't.
Were there things outside my control? Absolutely. But I could control whether I showed up for my workouts. I could control what I ate. I could control how I reacted to the curveballs life threw my way.
So, I doubled down on those things. I prioritized my workouts, knowing they were my stress-release valve and my source of strength. I fueled my body with healthy food, because I needed every ounce of energy to keep going. And I worked on my mindset, choosing to respond to challenges with resilience instead of resignation.
Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful that I went through that period of intense overwhelm. Why? Because it equipped me with the skills to handle whatever life throws my way. Now, when challenges arise (and they always do!), I don't panic. I adapt.
Starting something new – like a business, a fitness journey, or any kind of personal growth – during a stressful time might seem counterintuitive. But it can be the greatest gift you give yourself. It forces you to develop resilience, resourcefulness, and an unwavering belief in your own ability to overcome.
